The low-light indoor plants that actually thrive
We tested 18 houseplants in a dim north-facing flat for three months. Nine barely noticed the gloom — here's what thrived.

What low light really means
Low light isn’t no light. Most of these plants prefer bright, indirect light and a bit of benign neglect. Water only when the top few centimetres of soil are dry, dust the leaves so they can use what light there is, and rotate the pot a quarter-turn each week for even growth.
Our top performers
The ZZ plant, snake plant and pothos were unkillable. Peace lily told us when it was thirsty by drooping, then bounced back within the hour. If you’re just starting out, begin with those four.
